The non-profit Sturgeon Bay Sail Training Foundation (STF) will host an open-to-the-public Chili Supper Fundraiser on Sunday, April 22 from 5 – 8 pm.

In addition to great chili and the first sailboat race of the season, live music will be provided by Ben Larsen at 6 pm. You can also register for upcoming Sail Training classes, meet the instructors and learn about the program. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. You can purchase them at the event which takes place at the Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club, 600 Nautical Drive in Sturgeon Bay. All proceeds from this event help to maintain the STF fleet and training building in Sunset Park.

The Sail Training Foundation has helped students of all ages master the skills of sailing in a safe, fun environment. STF is committed to making sailing and sailing instruction available to the Door community. Classes geared to student ability and interest are offered at their Sailing Center and Launching Lagoon on Sturgeon Bay. This facility allows students quick and easy access to calmer waters with great wind. They also have plenty of indoor space for activities. The adult classes are taught at the Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club. The Sail Training Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation and associated with the Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club.

Here’s a great find created by 79cd36 on YouTube:

“Summer sailing trip from Saint Joseph, MI , to Door County, WI, aboard Ariel, a Cape Dory 36. This is video 2. Video includes departure from Manistee and northbound trip to Frankfort. Thunderstorm in Frankfort the day before departing early in the morning for Sturgeon Bay Canal. “Sometimes God calms the storm. At other times, He calms the sailor… and sometimes He makes us swim.”

As if I don’t already have enough to do – and that’s just the idea here! Write about sailing in Door County so I have to spend more time out there on the waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan… reporting. I have been an avid Door County sailor for more than 40 years so it’s payback time:

  • time to thank Poseidon (Neptune) for being so kind as to watch out for me, despite the situations I get myself into;
  • time to work a bit harder to protect this valuable fresh water resource that is threatened in so many ways;
  • time to share my enthusiasm for the sport of sailing with others who may be just starting out;
  • time to set up a place for other sailors to share their stories
  • and I am sure I will add so much more to this list…

So, welcome aboard.
